Narrative analysis

The Only Way Is Essex

Task 1
Todorov Analysis Of 'The Only Way Is Essex':
  • Equilibrium is the start of every episode of  'TOWIE'  is quite jokey or happy.
  • Distribution there will always be drama or conflict between the girls or boys or both and especially dram occurs with in the couples in relationships.
  • Recognition the characters in TOWIE will pass gossip around and make the gossip worse and interfere with everyone's business.
  • Repair in the show is people confront each other with the issues like the gossip and either make it worse or they apologise to each other.
  • Return Equilibrium / New Equilibrium the show always ends on either a good or bad note, either the dram in the episode escalates and makes things work or people sort out their differences and make up to be a happy ending to the show but the majority of the time the show ends on a cliff hanger for example Wednesday night (last night 17th October) the episode ended with Mario and Lucy almost ending their engagement for silly reasons

The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE)

The OnlynWay Is Essex is a structured reality TV show shown on ITV2 every Sunday and Wednesday nights at 10pm. The production company for "The Pnly Way IS Essex" Is "lime pictures". The show has been so successful it is now on its seventh series.
The Daily Mail claims that "The Only Way Is Essex" attracts roughly 2.22million viewers

The first five minutes to "The Only Way Is Essex" (TOWIE) gives us a brief warning/intro to the show describing what will happen and says that there are parts with in the show designed "Purely" for our entertainment yet other parts are real.

The episode i watched was the very first episode of the 7th series. This episode contained a few brief clips from last series helping viewers to understand what went on in the last series to allow them to follow whats going to happen in the newest series. with in the start on the episode there was a scene with some girls shopping for party dresses, this hints already that we will be seeing some sort of party happening later on in the show, theres also a couple at a zoo/farm with animals jokes already start as this part shows "Joey Essex"  wearing ski googles possible forced to wear them for the fact the show said things were included for our entertainment but seeing as Joey does come across as a ditsy character he may genuinely want to wear them. There is also a clip with most of the Essex cast together at a triathlon supporting some of the other cast that took place in the triathlon in the summer.

The sounds within the show are diegetic and synchronised. As the show is structured reality most of the sound wont be put on besides some on the music they use as the show is between adverts. As the show is reality based there is not set like Hollyokas or Corrination Street so the shots are more realistic like in their homes or in the city of Essex itself.
The majority of the shots within the first five minutes are taken as close up shots of the cast to express emotion within the characters or panning shots are used of the cast in cars or walking somewhere.

Lighting and make up may be set up to help make things stand out as this is Essex things are always trying to look bigger and better and more fabulous. i would say that some of the lighting even in the homes of the cast to out in the town of essex is three point lighting to prevent harsh shadows being cast on the characters faces. i would also say that the lighting will help to stop the glare of the sun making streaks on the camera lens, it also helps to make all shots look more professional and hollywood esc.

Mediation

Mediation is when we encounter media text, but we are not see in reality, but someone else's version of it.
the media place us at one renove from reality: they take something that is real and put it into their own version.

The Sun

The stories on the sun website are quite negative and portray women as a sex symbol, as shown in this link to The Sun newspaper:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/4576711/Mila-Kunis-topless-picture-as-Esquire-crowns-her-sexiest-woman-alive.html
The sun tends to target woman almost in a sexist was making women look bad or making the out to be ones who moan or brag about things for example the latest story about Cheryl Cole hating Simon Cowl in this link:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/4576432/cheryl-cole-simon-cowell-was-an-arrogant-gutless-coward-for-sacking-me.html
it seems that the sun will make women look less than men showing men have more power than women, even though there are still negative things about men there is more headlines to do with women making front line news in this paper, but there are some positive parts in the newspaper about women but more negative than positives making front-page news.

The Mirror

The Mirror does not have a lot about women but the bits that it does consist on about women is still negative. Again the same as The Sun newspaper also is showing Mila Kunis topless portraying women as sex symbols in the link: http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/mila-kunis-topless-and-naked-in-esquire-1366201
The paper seems to try and find anything to moan about that women do wrong for example they are mentioning the typical stereotype that women drivers are bad just because this one celeb made a mistake like everyone does once in a while but because its a women its just that bit more of a big deal to make a fuss over : http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/helen-flanagans-got-new-hair-and-is-bad-1364068

The Daily Mail

The Daily Mail is more to the point of making news rather than just digging at celebrities it targets the public more than celebrities. it shows that not do men commit crimes but women can do worse and get away with it : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2214081/Romanian-fraudster-helped-steal-10m-benefits-allowed-stay-Britain-protect-human-rights.html
This paper doesn't seem to just dig at women it evens the negativity on men and women not just one gender.

fly on the wall , structured reality amd fiction prodduction

A fly on the wall documentary is when someone gores undercover and is able to get information by spying on people/person and go un-noticed for a while whilst trying to find out information about a perosn or a few people.
An example of this is "the tourist" staring Angelina Jole. The first sceens of the film it gives a demonstration of what some people do to spy on others

Structured reality programing/scripted reality is a type of television series featuring real people who talk unscripted but are put in stuations which are pre-arranged and set up by production/ producers.
An example of this would be "The Only Way Is Essex", "Made In Chelsea" or "Gordie Shore"These shows show mostly reality (everyday situations in everyday life) but they add a twist for our entertainment purpose.

Fiction Production is when production companies turn i.e fiction texts into movies or television shows , or in other words something unrealistic like "Doctor Who" or "Alice In Wonderland"
